Research Update

My research is going well as of this point. I have been successful at finding articles in different areas that I wish to hit during my paper. Since I have been doing well it allowed me to lock in on my research topic. When I go into the library next week I want to focus on obtaining more stats and researched data on my topic to help support my claims of my authors. Also, I wish to find research in the area of how this is affecting us as a society and why we should care about the over prescribing of psychotropic medication. I still have a ways to go before even thinking about placing an outline together for my paper. I've only found a handful of articles and I know I need many more. However, it seems to be going well and that it shouldn't be a difficult task to keeping find scholarly articles.

My original question is Are psychotropic medication being over prescribed? I think my research topic question may fall under the category -Synthesizer of Current Best Thinking on a Problem- I am not sure how to reframe the question though for this category. If I had to take a guess I would restate the question as -->> What is the current opinion of psychotropic medication being over prescribed in today's society?

Research Strategy

I plan to use a variety of different sources for my research paper. First I would do the necessary research in books, scholarly articles, and scholarly magazine articles. Second, I would wish to have interviews with some psychiatrist and those prescribed the psychotropic medication. Thirdly, I wish to collect data and surveys on the prescribing of psychotropic medication.

Search terms:
Psychotropic medication
Over prescribing
Psychiatric medications
misdiagnosing
mental illness
Drug companies
Pharmaceutical

"Plans to do"

My intended audience for my research paper would be psychiatrist because they are the individuals responsible for prescribing the psychotropic medication. Also, scholars interested in medicine because it would be a category they are familiar with and are interested in. Also, pharmacist because I have read that they are loose when it comes to refilling the medication. Finally, I would say those suffering my a mental illness because it my be an eye opener to them to see if they believe they should be medicated or not.

The purpose of my research paper would be to alert others about the on growing issue of psychotropic medication being described. I would want those to be aware of the necessary diagnostic procedures and affects of misdiagnosing.

Exploartion and Focusing

Part 1: Exploration
1. For my research project I plan to focus on the issue of psychotropic medication being over prescribed.
2. I am interested in psychology and that is my intended major right now. I am debating about being a psychologist or psychiatrist. Either way this is an issue in my field of choice.
3. I think it is a growing problem in our society. When you visit a psychiatrist, one can most likely leave with medicine and each year many are misdiagnosed.
4. I already know that many symptoms can be mislead for different mental illnesses. Also, that psychiatrist are not clearly doing the proper procedures to determine an illness due to time. I am most curious about why society feels in order to feel better you have to be doped up on drugs.
5. I expect to due the most research in psychology and medicine. I assume it is studied by statistics and observation.
6. I could interview psychiatrist, psychologist, and patients willing to talk to me about their experience with drugs being over prescribed.

Part 2: Focusing
Are psychotropic drugs being over prescribed in America?

Research Topic and Questions

Research Topic:
Overprescribing of psychotropic prescription drugs

Questions:
1. How does a psychiatrist determine an individual's disorder and which drugs to then prescribed?
2. Does media have an influence on the increasing number of psychotropic drugs being prescribed?
3. How many times is a symptom misread and then therefore misdiagnosed?

Who's interested:
With this topic people who are interested in the field of psychology, nursing, and medicine would be concerned with this topic.

They want only the best work done. They can work for long periods of time on their own to get a project done. Onlys do appreciate to be recognize for their accomplishments. Finally, the youngest are challengers. They always want to be noticed and are good at adding fun into any activity. However, they usually aren't taken seriously.

The author points out, so what? His answer is, "know thyself and know the circumstances you are working in." He claims it is important to know your birth order personality in order to know what you are working with, but it is up to the individual to expand upon those characteristics.
